Woman mauled to death by lioness in South African wildlife park
An American tourist was mauled to death by a lioness at a wildlife park in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The incident on Monday (June 1) happened in a wildlife park called "Lion Park."
The tourist destination is located just outside of Johannesburg.
It promises visitors a close up view of the African wildlife from the comforts of their own car.
According to The Telegraph, the 22-year-old woman was mauled to death after a lioness bit her through a car window.
Witnesses say that they saw her taking pictures of the lion from up close when it attacked them through the opened car window.
The park's spokesman, Mr Scott Simpson, told media outlets that she died despite the best efforts of the paramedics.
Her South African male companion was sent to the hospital after he sustained injuries to his arm.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent attacks in the park.
ABC News Australia reported that in March, an Australian tourist had been injured after lioness attacked him after driving through the park with his windows opened.
Just two days after that, a 13-year-old boy was attacked by a cheetah when he was riding his bicycle through the park.
Despite the loss of life, there are no plans to euthanise the lion.
“We won’t euthanise it, that’s not an option," said Mr Simpson.
