A six-week-old baby was found dead in Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, on Friday (July 24).

The baby girl is believed to have been stabbed and her throat slit, reported Newcastle Herald.

Neighbours told Sydney Morning Herald they heard the baby screaming before she died.

The 26-year-old Senegalese mother is assisting police in investigations.

She will also be undergoing tests to assess her mental health.

Neighbour Ellen Graf said that she occasionally saw the mother with the newborn.

Said Ms Graf: "It (finding the dead baby girl) happened around 9am. Two ambulances came out with their sirens blaring, then the police came. There was a lot of commotion around here.

"A neighbour of mine said that they saw the mother in hand cuffs come out screaming."

Newcastle Superintendent John Gralton said that they are currently investigating whether the mother is suffering from postnatal depression, according to 9news.

"It's a tragic set of circumstances and our hearts do go out to other members of the family.

"The death is being treated as suspicious."

The woman's sister-in-law called emergency services after finding the dead baby in the house.

The baby's father was also believed to be in the house at the time of the alleged murder.

Visibly distraught people, believed to be friends and relatives of the family, were seen being comforted by emergency services and neighbours outside the house.
