This article is more than 12 months old

A four-year-old boy in China died after being trapped in an escalator on Thursday, the latest in a number of accidents involving escalators.

He was with his mother and sister at the Hong Qi He Gou Metro Station in Chongqing when the incident occurred.

People's Daily Online reported that very few details of the accident have been released as investigation is going on.

According to the Shanghaiist, the boy was playing on the escalator when he got crushed between the handrail and the ground.

Although staff at the station tried to shut down the escalator immediately, it was too late.

Security personnel, too, tried to rescue him, but failed.

Mail Online reported that his mum had held on to his hand for a minute while he was pinned under the handrail and watched helplessly as he lost consciousness.

She and the boy's sister were seen distraught and crying at the scene.

In the last four months, a number of people have been injured or killed while riding the escalator.
