Driver slammed for illegal parking on Christmas Day

This article is more than 12 months old

A driver who parked his car illegally in Gurney Drive, Penang, during a Christmas countdown party has been criticised on social media, after a photograph showed that a group of disabled people were unable to gain access to the road.

The white sedan is shown blocking a ramp meant for the disabled, causing difficulty to several wheelchair users, Malaysia's The Star reported.

Pulau Tikus assemblyman Yap Soo Huey shared the photo on her Facebook page on Christmas Day and sparked a heated debate in the post's comment section.

She had captioned: "Shame on driver of white Honda City parked in front of the ramp", alongside the photo.

"Six wheelchair users were blocked from getting off Gurney Drive walkway. There are only two ramps along Gurney Drive, one on each end," she wrote.

NOT FIRST TIME

When contacted, Ms Yap said it was not the first time that people have parked recklessly. She said she shared the photo to create awareness.

"Aiyoyo... so inconsiderate... summon lor," wrote Priscilla Fork while another person tagged "Penang Idiot Parking & Reckless Driver" as his comment.

Some netizens asked why the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) did not tow the car away.

Dr Tan Kim Hooi, MBPP Enforcement and Public Education committee alternate chairman, said too many events were taking place that night.

He said there was not enough manpower to take care of both traffic and parking.

"We will arrange for our officer to patrol such hot spots to avoid such issues from occurring again," he said in a Whatsapp text.
