Victim and friend were on trip to Malacca

His plans to spend the long weekend with a friend on a self-drive trip to Malacca ended in tragedy on Saturday.

National serviceman Ng Kai Jie, 22, suffered head injuries and died after the rental car he was driving crashed into the back of a lorry around 5.30pm.

His passenger, Mr Alson Ngian, 23, suffered minor injuries, reported Shin Min Daily News.

Mr Ngian and lorry driver Baharom Ibrahim, 44, were taken to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital in Batu Pahat for treatment.

Batu Pahat district police told Singapore media that both vehicles were travelling along the North-South Highway towards Kuala Lumpur when the accident happened between Yong Peng and Pagoh.

The impact of the crash sent both vehicles veering off the road and into a ditch on the left. Photos of the accident scene showed that the front of the car was badly damaged and that both airbags were deployed.

Mr Ng's parents arrived at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital yesterday morning, accompanied by two relatives.

They were there to collect his body, which had been sent to the hospital for a post-mortem.

They declined to be interviewed.
