Royston Tan wins Japan film award
Royston Tan took home the Best Asian Short Film award at the Sapporo International Short Film Festival 2016.
The 40-year-old director bagged the award on Saturday for his short film, Bunga Sayang, a segment in local anthology film, 7 Letters.
It is the first time that a Singaporean film has bagged the Best Asian Short Film at the festival in 11 years.
Bunga Sayang is about a young boy who becomes friends with an old Malay woman - his neighbour.
Tan said the audience at the festival noted that Bunga Sayang brought out a romantic side to him.
He said: "I am not really a romantic person, but I will do my very best to be more romantic after winning this award."
Tan also said that it had been about a decade since he was in Sapporo for two months to write his second feature film, 4:30, and Monkeylove, a short film - both in 2005.
"I am back again to where it started. Winning the award felt like a full circle."
7 Letters was directed by seven award-winning Singaporean directors - Boo Junfeng, Eric Khoo, K. Rajagopal, Jack Neo, Tan Pin Pin, Kelvin Tong and Royston Tan - and won the Kumamoto City Award last month.

US actress Leslie Jones (above) may have scored a date - with "America's Sexiest Teacher" no less. Jones, who starred in the recent reboot of Ghostbusters, got into a Twitter flirtation with high-school teacher Nicholas Ferroni, 35, that went viral over the weekend.
Mr Ferroni, a high- school teacher who was named one of Men's Fitness Magazine's "Fittest Men in the World", had posted about a skit Jones was in on comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live.
Jones, 49, replied on Twitter asking Mr Ferroni if he was single. The pair then engaged in a flirtatious back-and-forth before Jones tweeted: "I'm not doing any more work. If you interested you will get at me."
Ferroni's reply? "You're right and I will."
Olivia Wilde posts picture of new baby daughter
Actors Olivia Wilde (above), 32, and Jason Sudeikis, 41, welcomed their newborn baby girl last Tuesday.
Daisy Josephine Sudeikis (top) made her first appearance on her mother's Instagram page four days after her arrival.
The caption for the picture read: "There goes the neighbourhood. Daisy Josephine Sudeikis. Born, like a boss, on #internationaldayofthegirl".
The proud mother kept her baby's sex hush-hush, until she took to her Twitter page on Sept 25 to slam US presidential nominee Donald Trump about his sexist remarks towards women, and mentioned that she is "someone who is about to have a daughter".
