Donald Trump says he sometimes carry a gun because he "likes to be unpredictable".

At the Republican presidential candidate debate on Wednesday night (Oct 28) on CNBC, the real estate billionaire was asked if he would be more comfortable if his employees brought guns to work.

"Yes, I might feel more comfortable," said Mr Trump. "I do carry, on occasion. Sometimes a lot. I like to be unpredictable."

Mr Trump has a permit to carry a gun in New York, where the possession of firearms is regulated.

The question was in light of his comments on NBC's Meet the Press on Oct 3 on the mass shooting in a community college in Oregon two days before which left at least 10 people dead.

"If you had teachers with guns you would've been a hell of a lot better off," he had said.

He claimed in Wednesday's debate: "Gun free zones are target practice for the sickos and for the mentally ill.

"I think gun free zones are a catastrophe; they are a feeding frenzy for sick people."

The moderator went on to highlight that NBC had confirmed that several Trump properties do not allow any firearms, with or without permit.

Mr Trump then said he would "change" the rules.
