An explicit video of a woman who looks like she's being raped after she was drugged has gone viral in China.

The victim bears a striking resemblance to actress Yang Mi.

After the scandal broke on the Internet last week, the Chinese actress released a statement via a spokesman that she was appalled at the damage that the video has done to her reputation.

She is adamant that the woman in the video isn't her.

However, the damage has been done.

The video is currently circulating with titles such as Actress Yang Mi Being Drugged.

Appeals from Yang, 28, and her husband Hawick Lau, for netizens to stop sharing the video and to delete it have fallen on deaf ears.

Shanghai Daily, Beijing Times, Xinhua News, Want China Times and Asian Pop News reported that Yang has filed a police report.

Netizens who compared images of the woman in the video with Yang Mi (pictured below) have said that there seemed to be evidence that they are different people.

For instance, the woman in the video has moles on her body which Yang doesn't.

Some netizens have also pointed out that since Yang gave birth by Cesarean section last June, she would have a scar on her abdomen, which isn't present on the woman in the video.

The actress, who made the police report in Beijing has told Chinese media that she believes that someone is trying to frame her.

She said: "As a public figure, we are lucky to have a certain amount of influence on society.

"However, this kind of influence is being used a malicious propaganda, and even as a way to earn profits illegally.

"This isn't just about me being personally targeted, but it is also a very evil scheme.

"I don't want to see any fellow artistes in showbiz suffer such a plight in the future.

"Hence, I wish to take a stand and work with the police to prevent similar cases from happening (in the future) and to safeguard our rights through legal means."

Yang has since gone on Chinese microblog Weibo to ask the creator of the video to apologise to her in public.

According to the Beijing Times, the woman being filmed had hired a designated driving service last year only to fall victim to an unlicensed driver.

The driver, Mr Zhou, made the video clip to blackmail her.

He has since been taken into custody.
