Malaysia teen dies trying to save grandma in fire
A teenager died while trying to save her grandmother who was trapped in their burning house in Kota Kinabalu.
The charred remains of Nurul Farhana Zulkifli, 15, were found in an embrace with her 86-year-old grandmother, Madam Tiah Awang, near the main door.
Madam Tiah's house was among the three houses which were destroyed in the fire, which was believed to have been caused by a short circuit at about 8pm on Thursday.
The two lived together in one house while Nurul's parents and brother lived in a house next door, The Star reported.
Ms Rosnizah Ngadiman, 36, a relative whose house was spared, said she was cooking when she suddenly heard screams of "Nurul, Nurul!" by the girl's father Hamid.
She said she initially thought there was a fight.
"I heard my cousin Hamid scream but I was not aware that their house was on fire," she told The Star.
She said when she looked out of the window, she was horrified to see the entire house ablaze.
Ms Rosnizah said: "I immediately alerted my husband and children as well as the others to get out of the house."
By the time firefighters reached the scene, the house was burned to the ground.
Investigations into the cause of the incident are underway.
