Suspecting that his girlfriend had cheated on him, a technician in Kuala Lumpur bashed her to death before attempting suicide by slashing his wrist.

Police officers, who arrived at the crime scene seven minutes after receiving an anonymous call, saw a man at the front door of a flat in Taman Jinjang Baru with a bloodied wrist.

In the living room was the body of a 36-year-old woman, sprawled on the ground motionless with her left arm bruised.

She is believed to have been dead for about 12 hours, The Star reported.

"It was a crime of passion," said Sentul police spokesman, Assistant Commissioner R. Munusamy.

"The suspect admitted to beating and killing her in a fit of jealous rage.

"He suspected his girlfriend was having an affair when she refused to come home to take care of their four-year-old daughter," he said.

The couple have been living together for the past five years.

He is a wiring technician and she was a beer promoter in a pub.

ACP Munusamy said police had remanded the suspect, 36, until July 21 and would investigate him for murder, adding that initial investigations showed the couple had been fighting since Thursday.

The child is now staying with her maternal grandfather in Rawang.

A source said the man sent his daughter there on Friday night, hours after he allegedly killed his girlfriend.

Neighbours said the couple had moved into the flat just about a month ago.

One neighbour, who declined to be named, said the woman was pretty and friendly.

"I heard them arguing a few times. He was fierce towards her."

Another neighbour said that about a week ago, the woman was heard complaining about her boyfriend after a fight.
