Man wanted for stealing bucket from armoured truck

NEW YORK CITY: A lucky - or perhaps well-informed - thief grabbed a nondescript aluminium bucket from the back of an open truck in New York and walked away with US$1.6 million (S$2.3 million) in gold.

The bucket, containing gold flakes, weighed 39kg and he took it when the security guards of the armoured truck were distracted.

Surveillance footage showed the brazen theft.

It showed the man making a quick getaway on foot though the crowded late afternoon streets of midtown Manhattan on Sept 29, amid oblivious passers-by.

"I think he just saw an opportunity and took the pail and walked off," detective Martin Pastor told WNBC-TV, which broadcast the footage on Tuesday.

In the video, the man, who looked stocky and aged between 50 and 60, walks calmly through crowds.

Detective Pastor said the man is still at large and police believe he is in Florida.
