BREAKING: United appoint van Gaal
Manchester United have appointed Holland national coach Louis van Gaal as their new manager on a three-year deal.
After a disappointing season which saw the club sack David Moyes after just 10 months into his six-year contract, the Red Devils have turned to the experienced Dutchman to steer them back onto the path of success.
Speaking to United's official website, van Gaal said: ""It was always a wish for me to work in the Premier League.
"To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud. I have managed in games at Old Trafford before and know what an incredible arena Old Trafford is and how passionate and knowledgeable the fans are.
"This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I'm sure we will make history."
United finished seventh in the English Premier League last season and will miss out on European football for the first time since 1996.
Welsh winger Ryan Giggs, United's record appearance maker and interim manager after Moyes' departure, will serve as van Gaal's assistant manager while Frans Hoek and Marcel Bout will join the club as assistant coaches.
Hoek will specialise in goalkeeping while Bout will serve as an opposition scout.
Van Gaal, whose glittering CV includes domestic and Champions League wins with Ajax Amsterdam, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, will link up with United after his final assignment with Holland at the World Cup in Brazil.
