Weird for weird's sake
Our resident Kiss92 DJ/journo tries to wrap his brain around Miley Cyrus' crazy new video with The Flaming Lips
COMMENTARY
I suspect that my colleagues Maddy Barber and Arnold Gay think I'm weird.
They've told me this multiple times.
We spend a lot of time together on our breakfast show - Maddy, Jason and Arnold in the Morning - and we know each other very well now.
If they think I'm weird, they are most likely correct. Thing is, I'm not THAT weird.
I'm only relatively weird compared to them because they're both so super boring. (I'm joking... Sort of.)
If one is going to be weird in this world, one must know the limits of one's weirdness, or else one ends up slipping past the weirdness event horizon and getting sucked into a vortex of chaos.
I value my sanity, thanks.
Miley Cyrus, on the other hand, is another story.
On the evidence of her latest project, a music video with The Flaming Lips called Blonde SuperFreak Steals the Magic Brain, she's venturing into some rather dangerous territory.
Self-consciously psychedelic, the video is of a naked blonde lady who steals a gooey brain from Cyrus at the behest of an evil wizard played by former pop star Moby. The naked lady runs away, only to be captured by a mutant Santa Claus.
Meanwhile there are crazy rainbows and explosions of glitter. A mouth is painted like an eye. A beetle-man swims around.
Miley herself spends her time drooling, shouting into a phone and lolling her head around like a mad woman. There's no real music to speak of, just some strange, off-putting noises.
This is WEIRD and I don't really like it at all. In fact, I haven't liked anything Cyrus has done since she started pooping all over her Hannah Montana legacy.
The tongue thing. The twerking thing. The furries. The dead dog tattoo. She's being weird for weirdness' sake.
Perhaps this is why her TV concert special in the US bombed. Miley Cyrus: Bangerz Tour aired on Sunday, and only picked up about two million viewers.
Just to put that in perspective, a new talent show brought in over four million.
We expect our artists to be a little eccentric, but Miley has been acting totally bonkers. Life isn't always a Dario Argento movie, girlfriend.
