How one dad got his kids to clean the dishes

If asking your children nicely doesn't work, threaten them — in a creative manner.

Reddit user Shane Labuzan was fed up that his kids had been leaving messes for him and his wife to clean, according to Metro.

Today Parents reported that to solve this problem once and for all, he decided to write a note to his kids that was inspired by thriller Taken (2008), which stars Liam Neeson.

In the movie, Neeson plays a former CIA agent who tries to track down his daughter after she is kidnapped.

The famed monologue he makes over the phone goes: "I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don't have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills."

This is the note that Mr Labuzan put up for his children, who are aged between 16 to 20.

This was his way of encouraging his children to use the dishwasher.

The note has apparently prevented any more mess in the kitchen since.

Mr Labuzan told Today Parents: "Since my fiancee and I work all day and they are home alone, I wasn't always around to police the matter, so I decided to put Liam on overwatch to speak for me when I wasn't around.

"Every time they might be tempted to just leave a mess in the sink for me to clean up later, they would have to look him in the eyes and question their next move."

His teenage children used to regularly leave around bowls of noodles and cereal.

Mr Labuzan said that although they were messy, they were good kids.

"When it comes to the important issues in life (getting good grades, having summer jobs, planning a college career path), they meet or exceed my expectations all the time.

"So I try and cut them a little slack. But as they move on to college and become young adults, they need to learn how to be good roommates, and at this point they are incredibly bad at that."

So what did he mean by he would "disconnect them" should they ever make another mess?

He said: "Each one has had their electronic world 'taken' for a period of time because they thought they would test my resolve.

"After being ordered to completely empty the dishwasher and put their neglected mess in its proper place, they were then reconnected."
