Elderly woman cuts up $1.4 million in cash so her heirs won't get it
An 85-year-old Austrian decided to destroy her millions in savings so her family would not inherit it.
The elderly woman cut up her passbooks and shredded 950,000 Euros (S$1,450,000) in cash before her death in a retirement home.
She left all the tiny scraps of paper on her bed.
We can think of a few other methods to get rid of the money: Spend it all, make a will or burn it.
But perhaps the old woman wanted to taunt them from beyond the grave by putting the money in plain sight but beyond their reach.
But her actions came to naught.
Austria's central bank has pledged to replace all the cash.
Mr Friedrich Hammerschmidt, deputy head of Oesterreichische Nationalbank's cashier division, said: "If the heirs can only find shreds of money and if the origin of the money is assured, then of course it can all be replaced.
"If we didn't pay out the money then we would be punishing the wrong people."
