Swim Stars meet attracts stellar cast
Double gold medallist Benjamin Proud will headline a stellar cast of Commonwealth Games champions at the inaugural Prudential Singapore Swim Stars meet next month.
Englishman Proud, 19, shot to stardom at last month's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, by winning the 50 metres freestyle and 50m butterfly events, setting a new Games record of 22.93 seconds in the latter.
Other Commonwealth Games gold medallists who will grace the OCBC Aquatic Centre are Scotland's Ross Murdoch (200m breaststroke), Wales' Georgia Davies (50m backstroke) and the England trio of Adam Peaty (100m breaststroke) Sophie Taylor (100m breaststroke) and Francesca Halsall (50m freestyle and 50m fly).
Australia's Commonwealth Games champions Emily Seebohm (100m backstroke), Leiston Pickett (50m breaststroke) and James Magnussen (100m freestyle) will also be among the swimmers from 17 nations who will compete here.
Stephan Caron, co-founder of Sports Swim Organisation who are the promoters of the Prudential Swim Stars meet, said: "The calibre of swimmers we have is astounding.
"Never before have we seen so many gold medallists in the same pool in Singapore.
ENCOURAGING
"This is really encouraging and validates our objectives in the first place - to create a new swimming event that will attract some of the brightest swim stars in the world.
"We are very grateful for the partnership with Prudential. They have been incredibly supportive of our event from day one of our discussions and were also keen to work with us to reach out to the local community via our swim clinics and other initiatives."
Outreach programmes lined up will see some of these international swim stars conduct clinics at selected schools before taking part in a swim-off against the kids at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.
Prudential Singapore chief executive Tomas Urbanec said: "The Prudential Singapore Swim Stars will bring people together through a spectacular display of sporting excellence with world-class swimming champions in Singapore, and also gives an opportunity to kids and adults alike to participate and learn from the best.
"This event aligns with our commitment to inspire and encourage healthy, active lifestyles in Singapore."
