World No. 5 Feng will spearhead table tennis team at SEA Games
She has won three Olympic medals and been part of a world championship-winning team.
Along the way, Feng Tianwei has also collected many other international trophies in what is already shaping up to be a storied career in table tennis.
Subject to approval by the Singapore National Olympic Council, Feng, the women's singles world No. 5, will lead the Republic's team at this year's South-east Asia (SEA) Games on home soil.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Keppel-Singapore Table Tennis Association annual awards dinner at the Orchid Country Club last night, women's head coach Jing Junhong said: "The SEA Games is in our country this year and we will send a strong team, for sure.
"We haven't tied down who will be competing in which events, but Tianwei will be in the team for sure, provided she is free from injury," added the former national player, who won the coach of the year accolade last night.
With a slew of world-class male and female players in their ranks, the STTA has recently tried to use the biennial SEA Games as a stage to blood some youngsters, while also not losing out on the gold medals.
CLEAN SWEEP
With Feng missing, world No. 13 Yu Mengyu led the women's team at the 2013 Games in Myanmar, where the Republic won all four titles on offer.
Feng, 28, picked up the national sports association's player of the year award last night for the fifth time after clinching three titles - Japan Open, Australia Open and Philippines Open - in the International Table Tennis Federation World Tour last year.
She said: "I was pretty satisfied with my performance last year; there were years where I didn't win a single title on Tour and last year I won three."
While the 2015 Games will officially take place from June 5 to 16, the table tennis competition will start on June 1 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, with seven golds on offer.
"It is going to be on home ground for the first time in a while, so there is going to be more pressure (on us), and the environment is going to be different.
"But we will just try to do well," said Feng, who received $10,000 as part of her player of the year award.
The likes of Isabelle Li, Zhou Yihan and Lin Ye have improved by leaps and bounds, giving Jing a "happy headache" in terms of selection in the five-strong SEA Games women's team.
Young player of the year winner Lin Ye enjoyed a good 2014 - she won the Commonwealth Games women's singles bronze last year, and her world ranking rose from 65 in January last year to 48 in December.
Jing said: "It's good that the young guns are improving so well, they can constantly push each other, and hopefully they can start pushing the likes of Tianwei and (Yu) Mengyu soon."
A total of $33,000 was given out last night, with Keppel extending their sponsorship of the awards for another two years.
