Belgium grind out 1-0 win against Russia

Teenager Divock Origi fired Belgium into the last 16 of the World Cup on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Russia.

Belgian substitute Origi pounced at the 88-minute mark to settle a drab Group H encounter at the Maracana Stadium.

The defeat leaves Fabio Capello’s Russia facing a tense battle to qualify, with only one point from two games and sitting uncomfortably in third place.

The win saw Belgium guaranteed a place in the second round ahead of their final group game against South Korea.

Despite this, Fabio Capello insisted Sunday he believes his Russian charges will put a last-gasp loss to Belgium behind them and reach the second round of the World Cup.

The 2018 World Cup hosts will now have to beat an Algeria side which found its goal scoring touch or else head back early to Moscow.

That would be a another mission unaccomplished for Capello, whose stellar reputation from club level and a welter of successes with AC Milan and Real Madrid took a knock with England’s flop in 2010.
