Celtic reject Legia's call for meeting to discuss Champions League spot

The chairman of Legia Warsaw, Dariusz Mioduski wrote a letter to Celtic on Sunday (Aug 10) asking them for a meeting so that they can decide who should advance to the play-off round of the Champions League.

The letter, which was released by Legia Warsaw on their Twitter account, invoked the names of Celtic legends such as Jock Stein and Billy McNeill, in order to convince the Celtic management for a meeting.

Celtic's response?

A terse three-line statement released on their website on the same day basically saying, "No".

Here's the full statement

“We are disappointed by Legia Warsaw's comments. This is entirely a matter for UEFA and its processes. Accordingly, we will reserve further comment for the appropriate time.”

                                                                                                                                                           Celtic Football Club spokesperson

This latest story represents another twist in the drama of what should have been straight-forward qualification for the Champions League.

Polish champions Legia Warsaw had trounced Scottish club Celtic in the third qualifying round by a convincing aggregate score of 6-1

Unfortunately, Legia had fielded an ineligible player as a substitute in the dying minutes of the second-leg game. So Uefa forfeited the game, handing Celtic a 3-0 away win, which gave them an aggregate 4-4 draw but a victory by the away goals rule.

Celtic will meet Slovenian side Maribor for the first leg on Aug 20.

At least the  Legia fans cannot accuse the management of not trying. Of course, they should have got their house in order the first time round.
