Chelsea would explode if they bought di Maria and Falcao, claims Mourinho
Thanks, but no thanks.
It has been reported that Jose Mourinho had first refusal on Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao before their moves to Old Trafford in the summer.
According to a new book on his agent Jorge Mendes — The Key to Mendes — the Chelsea manager turned down the chance to sign the duo because he felt he didn’t need them and was worried their high wages would have “caused an explosion” in the dressing room.
Manchester United’s £59.7-million ($120.9m) record signing di Maria earns £200,000-a-week while loan ranger Falcao banks in a cool £265,000-a-week.
Both share an agent with Mourinho.
Explosion
The book quotes the Chelsea manager saying: “Jorge told me di Maria and Falcao are his players and he has to find solutions for them.
“But if Chelsea doesn’t have the financial capacity to pay eight, nine or 10 million euros a year, because of Fair Play, of course Mendes has to think about his players.
“We couldn’t bring Falcao or di Maria because I didn’t want to, either.
“I can’t have a player earning ten million when others earn three, four or five. That would have caused an explosion.”
