Costa raises a stink, Shawcross gets a year's worth of deodorant

The next time somebody accuses you of being smelly, keep your cool. You may just come up smelling like roses.

That was what happened with Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa taunted the defender during a confrontation at last Saturday’s (Nov 7) match by suggesting that he smelled "less than pleasant".

The belligerent Spanish striker, who was kept on a tight leash by Shawcross, pointed to the Englishman’s armpit, hinting that he had personal hygiene issues.

After the match which the Potters won 1-0, Shawcross’ wife tweeted a photo of her husband with a can of Dove deodorant.

The tweet pleased the personal hygiene care brand so much that they decided to supply Shawcross with a year’s worth of Dove deodorant.

Shawcross was pictured beaming from ear to ear as he held a can of the sponsored product during a press conference on Wednesday (Nov 11) to announce the deal.

And the 28-year-old was cool about the taunt, reported the Stoke Sentinel.

When asked about Costa’s notorious gamesmanship, Shawcross said: "I’ve played in the Championship and there’s a lot nastier people and tougher people.

"Once you’ve got Costa concentrating on you rather than the game, you’ve won the battle. I was pleased he was concentrating on me and just delighted to keep him quiet because he’s a fantastic player."

Shawcross did not say whether he would be sending some of the deodorant to Costa.
