GALLERY: "FIFA go home": World Cup protests worsen
Brazilian protesters have been taking to the streets since the Confederations Cup in June 2013 to be rid of the World Cup entirely.
But the protests intensified yesterday, after Mr Mohammed Ali became the eighth worker to die as the pressure to complete stadiums before the June 12 opening ceremony intensifies.
Since November workers have been killed at the rate of roughly one a month.
Mr Mohammed Ali's death in an electrical accident temporarily interrupted construction at one of the most-delayed venues with barely a month to go before the tournament kicks off. The appalling safety record highlights the weaknesses of Brazil's preparations in comparison with previous hosts.
On top of the deaths, protesters claim that the money used for the World Cup could be used to fund many other projects needed for health and education is being wasted on a tournament of white elephants and no legacy.
Yesterday, protesters in Rio de Janeiro denounced corruption and the perceived high cost of preparations for the World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, which will also be hosted by Rio de Janeiro.
Security fears are mounting as police officers have threatened to go on a strike when the World Cup starts on June 12 due to them being underpaid.
