Guess what? This Ronaldo (3-time Fifa Player of the Year) is a poker ace
That face of Ronaldo’s is proving to be a real winner. And’s it’s the impressive poker face of the original Brazilian Ronaldo we’re referring to, rather than the boyish good looks of Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 38-year-old World Cup champion and three-time Fifa Player of the Year winner has proven he’s not just good with his feet but he’s rather handy when it comes to poker as well.
Ronaldo pocketed a cool US$42,180 (S$56,344) at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) Main Event in the Bahamas yesterday morning (Singapore time).
The former Barcelona and Real Madrid star trumped some of the best poker players in the world by finishing 26th in a field of 816 at the US$1.4m event.
Ronaldo is now the best placed sporting celebrity in PCA’s 10-year history, comfortably beating former Pokerstars “SportStar” Sergio Garcia’s 52nd place in 2012.
The Spanish golfer voiced his support for the Brazilian, taking to Twitter to say: “Watching Ronaldo play in one of the feature tables at the PCA, doing great!! #goRonaldoPCA.”
The Daily Mail quoted Ronaldo saying:
“I’m really excited, it’s the same emotion I used to have at the soccer fields playing at the highest level.
“The experience has been great, my first goal was to get a prize in a big tournament and I achieved that.”
Clearly, the 38-year-old has raised his game since he lost to tennis titan Rafael Nadal in a heads-up poker charity event late last year. Perhaps it’s time for a rematch?
