Minister announces Committee for Disability Sports

A Committee for Disability Sports will be formed to look at ways to increase sports participation among people with disabilities.

This was announced by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong at the Athletes' Achievement Award and appreciation function at the Singapore Swimming Club this evening (Jan 29).

The committee will be chaired by Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office and MCCY Sam Tan.

Other agencies in this committee include Sport Singapore, Singapore Disability Sports Council and Special Olympics Singapore, among others.

Mr Tan said: "We believe that sports can uplift the lives of persons with disabilities.

"We want to do more, so that more persons with disabilities can experience and enjoy sports.

"This would build a lasting legacy beyond the Asean Para Games, which Singapore  is hosting in December this year."

Some $145,000 was disbursed this evening at the awards to medallists from the 2014 Incheon Asian Para Games.

Singapore won one gold, one silver and four bronzes at the Games.
