French raider Smoking Sun lands in good order
Following a busy morning at the Kranji international stables which welcomed six overseas horses in the wee hours of Saturday, it was a much quieter affair later in the afternoon when French galloper SMOKING SUN arrived after an incident-free flight from Brussels.
Entered for the $3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup on Sunday, the five-year-old bay stallion is the ninth foreign entrant to have arrived for the two International Group 1 glamour events, the other being the $1 million KrisFlyer International Sprint over 1,200m.
This is the first time Smoking Sun is competing outside of Europe, where he has compiled a handy record of five wins and five placings from 13 starts.
He did not look any worse for wear when he came off his pallet despite the two-hour delay coupled with the 12-hour journey.
"C'est bon (It's good), c'est bon. That's what his grooms told us when we asked them how the trip was," chuckled Dr Dan Shaw, of the Singapore Turf Club veterinary department, who was on hand at Changi Airport to receive Smoking Sun.
"He arrived very nicely and was very perky. It was a good trip, no turbulence and smooth all the way through. Other than that bit of delay, which was due to air traffic control, everything's fine. There's nothing else to report on him.
FIRST TIME
"I understand this was his first time flying and he's done everything right for his first time. He ate well and was well-hydrated. He had no issues with the flight."
After Dr Shaw submitted Smoking Sun to the usual preliminary routine check-up on the tarmac and the immigration paperwork was all sorted out, the US-bred entire was led onto the float to be wheeled over to the Kranji stables to join the rest of the foreign runners.
While Smoking Sun is making his first trip to the Far East, his trainer Pascal Bary is certainly familiar with these surroundings.
The French handler saddled Gloria De Campeao to an unexpected victory in the SIA Cup in 2009 and almost made it back-to-back wins with the Brazilian stayer, only to lose lost by a half-length to Lizard's Desire in the 2010 edition.
By Smart Strike out of Burning Sunset, Smoking Sun is owned by the Niarchos family, one of the most famous horse breeders and owners in Europe.
Among their notable horses are Bago (Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 2004) and Divine Proportions (Prix de Diane in 2005).
Smoking Sun, who will be ridden by regular partner Stephane Pasquier, has already been successful at Group level.
After returning from a four-month spell, Smoking Sun has had two outings this year.
He took out the Group 2 Prix d'Harcourt over 2,000m on April 6 in impressive fashion, donning blinkers for the first time.
He then finished fourth behind Cirrus Des Aigles in the Group 1 Prix Ganay over 2,100m on April 27.

Last foreign entry will arrive tomorrow
The final foreign entry for the Singapore Airlines International Cup (2,000m) and KrisFlyer International Sprint (1,200m) is scheduled to land tomorrow.
Ireland's BALMONT MAST and MEDICEAN MAN arrived from London early this morning, and Japan's TOKEI HALO is scheduled to land at Changi Airport tomorrow at 5.15am.
Balmont Mast is trained by Edward Lynam, who is bringing his charge back for another crack at the KrisFlyer after his creditable fourth behind Hong Kong's Lucky Nine last year.
Medicean Man, trained by Jeremy Gask, is a regular Dubai campaigner who ran a close-up fourth to Hong Kong's Amber Sky in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint over 1,000m in late March.
The Hisashi Shimizu-trained Tokei Halo, who finishsed second in last year's Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Cup over 2,000m, will contest the SIA Cup.
