Singapore fighter Amir Khan defeats Philippines' Banario

Singapore mixed martial arts fighter Amir Khan continued to stake his claim for a title shot, after a first-round submission win over Philippine fighter Honorio Banario at One Championship’s event in Shanghai, China on Saturday (Sept 8) night.

Khan finished the task by compelling Banario to surrender with a deep rear naked choke in the first round.

Lightweight fighter Amir, 23, has now won two fights on the bounce, since a defeat by Russian Timofey Nastyukhin in Myanmar in February.

The other Singapore fighter on the Beyond The Horizon card, featherweight Christian Lee, experienced different fortunes, however.

The 20-year-old younger brother of Angela Lee was disqualified for an illegal suplex on his opponent, Edward Kelly of the Philippines, in the first round.

Meanwhile, in the main event of the night, ONE Championship strawweight title holder Xiong Jing Nan retained her belt by defeating Brazilian challenger Samara Santos.

In the process, Xiong set up a date at the ONE: Heart of the Lion event on Nov 9 in Singapore with ONE Championship atomweight champion Angela, 22, who will be challenging the 30-year-old Chinese in her double-title bid.
