Hosts favoured for water polo gold

Singapore have been dominant in water polo in the region, led by the senior men, who have won 28 consecutive gold medals at the biennial South-east Asia Games.

And the Republic are on course to bag gold at the 18th Asean University Games.

The sport was introduced at the Games only this year and the men from the host nation will take on Indonesia in the final today at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.

The hosts thrashed the Philippines 25-4 in their final round-robin match yesterday and will be favourites to bag the Games' first water polo gold and the nation's 24th of these Games.

Over the weekend, the Singapore men had already beaten Indonesia 8-6 and followed that up with a 10-6 win over Thailand.

The Indonesia-Singapore water polo clash will be the final contest of the Games, before the closing ceremony later this evening.

At press time last night, Thailand led the medal table with 50 gold, 34 silver and 33 bronze medals.

Indonesia were second (33 golds), followed by Malaysia (27) and Singapore were in fifth spot with 23 gold, 19 silver and 30 bronze medals. - HARESH KUMAR RAMANI
