Huge Team Singapore contingent for 2015 SEA Games
Some 950 athletes have made the first cut for selection for the 28th South-east Asia (SEA) Games, which will be held here from June 5 to 16.
The athletes come from all 36 sports that will feature at the biennial Games, which returns to Singapore for the first time since 1993.
While the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) has traditionally based selection for the SEA Games on the bronze medal result of the previous Games, secretary general Chris Chan said at the announcement yesterday (January 26) that the selection committee "took a slightly different approach today to be more extensive in the benchmark margin without compromising the standards of the contingent".
He added: "We are very encouraged by the large number of athletes who have been nominated, and that Singapore will be represented in all 36 sports and most of the events.
"Judging by the current figures, it is likely that we will be fielding the largest contingent to the SEA Games ever."
However, the actual size of the contingent is expected to be whittled down in April this year, as the various national sports associations finalise their selections.
