SEA Games: Lesser-known facts about S'pore's track and field athletes
Do you know which athlete won Singapore's first gold medal at the SEA Games (then called the SEAP Games)?
It's the late Tan Eng Yoon.
At the age of 31, Tan competed in the 1959 Games and won the 400m hurdles event in 54.90sec.
That achievement marked the first time Singapore’s flag was raised and the anthem was played at a sporting competition in a foreign country.
Tan also won the triple jump with a leap of 14.86m and a bronze in the 110m hurdles in 16.00sec.
