Shanti wins 200m gold
Veronica Shanti Pereira rewrote the women's 200m national record in fine style to nab Singapore's first sprinting gold medal since 1973.
After rewriting her national record set in the heats to finish the second fastest qualifier behind 100m winner and favourite Kayla Richardson, the 18-year-old outdid herself once more as she stunned the Filipina with a magnificent performance to clock 23.60s at the National Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The win was the Republic's first women's sprinting gold medal since 1973 when Glory Barnabas won the gold medal here at the South-east Asian Peninsular Games.
Richardson had to settle for silver after clocking 23.71s while Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Oanh nabbed bronze with a 23.92s effort.
