Update: Brazil fires Scolari as national football coach
Update: AFP reports that Luiz Filipe Scolari has been sacked as coach of the Brazilian football team. More to come as the story develops.
Brazilian media outlet Globo Esporte is reporting that Brazilian coach Luiz Filipe Scolar, 65, has stepped down as coach of the Brazilian football team.
Earlier reports stated that he refused to be drawn into speculation about his future after losing 3-0 to the Netherlands in the World Cup's third place match.
The coach, whose contract was to be reviewed at the end of the World Cup, said: “It is up to the president (of the Brazilian Football Confederation) to decide. We will hand in a final report and then leave it to him to analyse what needs to be done."
Brazil, of course, will be soul-searching for some time after crashing out of the tournament with a 7-1 humiliationat the hands of eventual champions Germany on July 8.
