Movie Review: The Program (NC16)
Those like me who have never considered Ben Foster the leading man type will have their minds changed.
His performance as disgraced US cyclist Lance Armstrong is a tour de force. Unfortunately, he is let down by Stephen Frears' directing.
Frears, who gave us biopics The Queen (2006) and Philomena (2013), doesn't offer any excitement or emotion.
Armstrong is depicted as a shrewd, conniving and arrogant hypocrite who orchestrated the doping incidents that led to his seven Tour de France victories.
There is never a moment that makes you understand Armstrong's motivations.
Every plot point is dealt in a business-like manner.
This is a clear example of bad storytelling.
If anyone wants to know more about Armstrong, there are better documentaries out there.
