Mother hen leads her chicks safely across Sengkang road

They were still "a fowl" of traffic laws.

A mother hen and her five chicks were spotted crossing a busy junction in Sengkang on Thursday - the third in a recent string of encounters showing animals navigating city life.

Earlier this week, a driver won praise for patiently waiting as a family of otters languished and frolicked on a filter lane near Braddell Road.

Two days later, a group of uncles at a Teck Whye coffee shop banded together to capture a reticulated python that had slithered onto the awning at their hangout. Armed with brooms and a plastic bag, they secured the reptile and slipped it into a sack.

In the latest clip, shared on Facebook page The SG Daily, the mother hen is seen strutting diagonally across the road - cocky at first, then breaking into a trot seemingly in a panic as a bus zooms by, while her chicks scramble to keep up.

The brood made it between the pedestrian lines, but technically broke traffic rules by crossing on red. A considerate driver let them pass instead of turning them into ayam penyet (smashed chicken).

The clip ends with the family making it safely onto the pavement.

"YNWA (You'll never walk alone)," quipped a Facebook user, referencing the theme song and slogan of English Premier League football champions Liverpool. The Liverbird on the club crest would no doubt agree.

"Going to (be) minced chicken at this rate," said another.

So why did the chicken cross the road?

Apparently, no one thought to ask. The New Paper, too, was unable to reach the hen for comment.
