This article is more than 12 months old

A boy lost his grip on an escalator handrail in a shopping mall in China and fell one storey.

The incident, which happened at around 5pm on May 19, was caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

The footage shows the boy, who is about two years old, walking around the mall with an older boy, who is about seven years old.

The older boy gets on an escalator and goes down one storey. The younger boy, however, stands in front of the escalator, looking unwilling to step on it.

After hesitating for a while, the boy grabs the handrail with both hands and is lifted onto the moving handrail.

He then loses his grip and falls off.

According to Shanghaiist, he fell about 8m.

The boy suffered serious injuries, but is no longer in critical condition.

His mother said a family friend was looking after the two children when the accident happened.

CCTV footage showed the family friend hurrying to the scene seconds after the accident.

The kids are believed to be cousins.

The boy's mother said that in the past, the boy would only get on the escalator if someone was holding his hand.
